Higgledy Village Indoor Play Barn, Fishers Adventure Farm

Higgledy Village

Fishers Adventure Farm Park is an award winning park situated in the heart of West Sussex. Fishers approached Russell Play to design their new play area, having fallen in love with Russell Play’s Spielart timber product and its organic shapes and playful look.

During the hot summer months Fishers Farm has an abundance of outdoor play opportunities for a broad age group. However, during the wetter, colder winter months their indoor play is mostly soft play, which mainly targets a younger age group. The client wanted a new indoor play area with the theme of a ‘Magical/Mystical Oak Woods’ aimed at children aged 3 to 9 years old.

With a barn suitable for conversion, they wanted to create an all-weather indoor play area using what is traditionally regarded as outdoor play equipment and by doing this, they were able to select more challenging play pieces to cover a broader age range.

A visually striking, multi activity playground
Russell Play created a bespoke playground design, handcrafted using the Spielart Robinia timber product range. Although this equipment is mostly used for outdoor play because of its durability and robustness, it is equally well suited for indoors. The design offers ample play opportunity for young visitors and it has given Fishers Farm activities that are visually appealing and unique for their client group.

When visitors walk through the barn doors, they are instantly immersed in the mystical world that is Higgledy. Children are immediately drawn to the central play house which acts as the focal point for the village. This imposing tower house, which includes a number of challenging internal platforms, also acts as the perfect vantage point to view the rest of the village. Various traversing trail elements help join smaller platform structures, offering kids a variety of different routes to take, each with a different play value.

The importance of playground design
Design expertise is the key to creating a successful play area such as Higgledy Village. It is important to have an understanding of what is possible within the space and the visual impact it has, rather than just placing units in the available space. Russell Play knows the possibilities of the Spielart timber product in making many interconnecting play activities and theming touches.

Being considerate of the barn’s internal dimensions, Russell Play put together a proposal that offers a variety of play opportunities as well as an attractive, overarching theme. The experience of the Russell Play design team ultimately realised the vision of the client in their unique circumstances.
