Priory Park Play Area, Chichester
Nestling in the heart of Chichester, a new play area rich with opportunities for all abilities has been designed and installed by Russell Play. Bespoke long-lasting Robinia was selected for the majority of the equipment which includes, a bespoke play castle with climbing rocks, sand play house, spring animals, swings, climbing structures and zip wire. The high-speed Surf Spinner was also chosen alongside a DDA compliant Access Whirl.
The area had to be sympathetically designed as it is situated between an ancient Moat and Bailey Bridge on one side and the remnants of the cities Roman walls on the other. An emphasis on natural materials was an important requirement of the brief and the Robinia timber was a perfect solution to help blend the area into the surrounding landscape. A large sand play area was constructed enclosed by a castellated timber fence for the toddler’s area, the junior play items were surfaced with enviromulch with log edging and safagrass.
Michael Gore, Chichester District Council’s Parks & Green Spaces Officer commented: “The play area is extremely popular and has been packed every day since the opening”. When asked what he thought about the design he said “It fitted in well with the historic setting of Priory Park and provided a wide range of challenging equipment, for a broad age range. The natural look was just right for this site and the planting helped to blend the play into the landscape”.
