Play: in
courtyards.
We’re seeing courtyard and small communal play spaces become increasingly popular in new developments and they’re transforming into multi-use spaces that all residents can enjoy. To prevent these areas becoming just another area of unused land, we can help design truly intergenerational spaces for all. By providing areas for everyone, we can create a usable courtyard that really stands out. To do this, consider making play an integral element to a scheme.
Our designers
maximise your space.
Estimator Elliott recommends, 'Silhouette. It really
compliments the feel of modern architecture. The
unique pieces can fit perfectly at the top of a modern
building or in an old Victorian high-street. The Urban
Design range from Berliner is also a great choice. It's
versatile, offers a selection of fantastic looking pieces,
and comes with numerous fixing methods.'
Consider your Courtyard!
Communal spaces can often be ignored. At Russell Play, we see them as important as any other area in a development. Here are our top tips and considerations for your courtyard space.
Seating
Seating is vital to make a courtyard truly usable. How will people of all ages enjoy your space? How can you use seating to divide areas? How could you use seating to shape the environment?
Play pockets
Play pockets are useful to introduce new activities and interest into small locations. Can the layout determine flow of users? What feeling do you want your play area to convey?
Planting and paths
Adding planting and paths can make an uninteresting shape feel more organic. Can you add texture to your space? What sort of plants suit your location? Can you use plants and paths to divide areas or create a journey? Would you like the planting and paths to create an open area or pockets within the courtyard?
Lighting
Lighting is important for outdoor areas. Have you considered use of natural light and creating shade? Is artificial light right for the area? How can you use existing physical aspects to develop more interesting lighting styles?
Style and size of play
We have a large range of product styles in our portfolio. Would your courtyard suit small timber trail items? Or would you like a more sculptural feature piece? Does your outdoor space suit any particular materials?
