Berliner Factory Tour

Our exclusive partners at Berliner have shared with us a video tour of their factory and build process.

The first steps towards Berliner Seilfabrik were made in 1865, when a company producing ropes for a Berlin lift manufacturer was founded. The quality of Berliner ropes has gained a worldwide reputation since then. The first net structures developed for playgrounds were created in the early 70’s. Now, with almost 50 years’ of experience in the playground industry, Berliner have designed a variety of products for unique playground landscapes around the world. The equipment is instantly recognisable, due to the combination of extensive rope design development and creative ideas.

Ropes and tensioning system

Berliner Seilfabrik began processing steel cable in 1865, gaining a world-renowned reputation for the manufacture of quality cable. They continue to use these traditional methods of cable manufacture to produce the U-Rope used in the play structures. It can be ensured that the quality and safety specifications of our ropes are in accordance with our high requirements. Berliner offer a broad range of rope diameters, wire cross sections and rope colours and have a cable suitable for every application – regardless of the purpose or loading condition. The external rope strands are covered with Polyester yarn, ensuring maximum abrasion resistance and colour fastness. The steel wires, compliant with EN 10264, are galvanised and have incredible strength. For most ropes in reach of hands they use four-stranded cables, which have the same design as fibre ropes. This results in a course surface texture which provides an optimal grip.

Technology and spare parts

High-loading capacity is reached via the combination of careful material selection and the right dimensions of all components. All load bearing elements of our Frameworx-system are corrosion resistant. The tubes are treated with a zinc-epoxy procedure and the knots and and straps for ropes and panels are comprised of aluminium (which is inherently corrosion resistant). The ropes are manufactured using materials with proven durability under extreme weather conditions and high play frequency.

The equipment has been awarded several prizes for design and function and in 2013 Berliner Seilfabrik won the ‘red dot design award’ for superior design quality.

Even the toughest equipment shows wear and tear after years of use but this is no limitation of Berliner Seilfabrik equipment. We are able to replace the oldest of net structures (even the first from 1971) and our spare part guarantee ensures the durability of all play equipment, even after 40 years.
